voting...

Postby cscottdraw on Fri Apr 17, 2009 9:46 pm

I hate public open vote because if I wanted to get quick votes on my entry I could just e-mail all of my friends and have them sign up for Foldees and tell them to vote for me because I will win an awesome price and tada! I now have 20 votes!

It sucks if people are doing this on the next contest voting forum, because we will all have to create cards for this in the future. I just wanted to ask that everyone be fair and if you want to encourage people to vote that's great, just don't tell them what one you made so that they can vote freely.

I do however like the rating system (like how we have on cards)

heya chelsey,

Just to let you know, the voting system for Foldees has been geared specifically to encourage fair voting. The reason we have a random rating engine is to prevent people from just coming in and voting for their friend's card and leaving. Also, when they rate more than one card, we can see patterns emerge, such as if they rate only one card highly and all others low, or specific ones lowly. So far, this has worked brilliantly. I am proud to say that we stand by our winners 100% so far, and they do end up as some of our top-sellers as well, so the system works :)

Thanks for your support!

I agree that the card system is fantastic, I just think we should be doing it for the current suggestion contest

you know what, Chelsey is absolutely right. people should vote for the best idea.

if we look at Foldees' fundamental structure, then the 'best idea' should mean a theme that would generate amazingly creative and commercially viable cards.
i mean, why would anybody want something as ubiquitous and versatile as monochrome as the theme? it's not as if you could incorporate a fairytale, graffiti, food, movie - or any other concept imaginable - as a monochromatic image, is it?

chak, i must confess *puts hands up*. i have garnered votes in an underhand fashion.

i asked a friend to vote for me purely on the strength that he/she was my friend, not simply because my idea was fresh, inspired and ultimately $$marketable$$. i think my friend may have passed it onto another friend, and so on. *sorry*

suddenly i've attracted a whole host of new Foldees community members. talented creatives from UK, US, Thailand, Australia, Korea, The Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and even El Salvador.

perhaps i should be disqualified for doing this?

i mean, it's possible they might even tell THEIR design friends and this whole signing up and voting malarkey could spiral out of control. and god forbid they start selling cards. my evil plan could generate revenue for Foldees. it's a terrible thought, i know.

but honestly...it's not the awesome prize that lures me [awesome though it is *rubs hands*].

what interests me about this competition is to really challenge the design community here - to take them out of their comfort zone, so to speak. it seems that some people here are concerned about the possible 'difficulties' of coming up with a suitable idea or in how to optimally execute a stunning monochromatic design. [and stunning they will indeed be]

i think the constraints that designers encounter will [or should] inspire them to make something MORE, from a lot less.

anyhoos, if i'm disqualified for my unscrupulous widening of the Foldees community-base then i accept my punishment with grace.

me n' me mates can always go somewhere else to play.

cheers!! :D

tsk... what do you say to that?

As long as your friends are designers, and joining the contest, then I guess their votes count too. We'll see.

wow you like to go off on tirades =)

I personally don't like monochromatic, I think it is far to open to be anything of a challenge. You can design whatever you want and then just change the color scheme. I don't feel as if I am being forced out of my comfort zone at all. But that is my own opinion. But obviously I am wrong, it seems to very popular.

Hopefully everyone isn't getting their entire family to create an account and vote. I am not specifying you, but people do this. I get e-mails from friends and family all the time asking me to vote for this photo or them in a singing competition. And, sorry to say, but I always vote for them. I don't think anyone should get disqualified for it, after all you can only vote once so they are at least getting new members on the site =)

I defiantly support informing as many people as possible about foldees. Designers will make more awesome cards and everyone else will buy them. ALL I was saying is that I think we should do the rating system (like the cards) instead of the one vote thing for the contest. I liked several of the entry and wished I could have voted for more than one.

But being that monochromatic has basically won, it really doesn't matter. I will design a card based on the theme I liked the most, or one of my own, and just make it monochromatic in color. I just think its awesome in the first place that Foldees gave us all a chance to pick our own types of themes. I mean just because monochrome wins at the contest doesn't mean they won't use one of the other ideas in the future. I mean its nothing to get all stressed about, its all in fun.
